Congress leader Sam Pitroda recently made significant remarks about Member of Parliament and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, comparing him to his father, Rajiv Gandhi. Pitroda believes that Rahul Gandhi is smarter and a better strategist than his father. He also discussed Rahul Gandhi’s potential to become the Prime Minister. Sam Pitroda, who is the President of the Indian Overseas Congress, emphasized that while Rahul Gandhi has all the qualities needed to be Prime Minister, it is ultimately up to the people to decide.
In an interview with PTI-Bhasha from Chicago, Pitroda highlighted the differences and similarities between Rajiv Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. He mentioned that he has had the opportunity to work closely with several Prime Ministers, including Rajiv Gandhi, P.V. Narasimha Rao, Manmohan Singh, V.P. Singh, Chandrashekhar, and H.D. Deve Gowda. Pitroda stated, “The difference between Rahul and Rajiv might be that Rahul is much smarter and a better strategist, while Rajiv believed more in action. Both share the same DNA, with similar concerns and emotions for people, and both genuinely believe in building a better India for everyone. They are both simple people with no big personal ambitions.”
Pitroda further added that Rahul and Rajiv Gandhi are leaders from different eras, who faced different issues and had different experiences. Rahul, according to Pitroda, had to endure two major personal tragedies in his life—the deaths of his grandmother and father—which brought unique challenges for him.

He also noted that the principles of both Rahul and Rajiv Gandhi have always been clear. Both are protectors of the idea of India as envisioned by the Congress Party, a vision that every leader in the party believes in. Pitroda said, “Narasimha Rao believed in it, Kharge Ji believes in it, and collectively, it is our job to build the India that our founders envisioned.”
When asked whether he sees Rahul Gandhi as the future Prime Minister of India, Pitroda said that it is for the people of India to decide. He acknowledged that he might be biased due to his personal experiences, but he believes Rahul is very capable. He described Rahul as a decent person, well-educated, with the right DNA, and sees him as a guardian of the Congress’s vision of democracy, which Rahul has always promoted.
Regarding the opinions of Congress leaders on Rahul’s suitability for the Prime Minister’s role if the party comes to power, Pitroda agreed with this view but emphasized that it is ultimately up to the party to make the decision. When asked if he sees qualities in Rahul that would make him a good Prime Minister in the future, Pitroda confidently replied, “Absolutely, there is no doubt about it.”
