The Serum Institute of India is working on developing an Mpox vaccine as cases increase worldwide. On August 14, the World Health Organization declared Mpox a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern” due to a surge in cases in several African countries.
Mpox Outbreak in Africa
Besides Congo, other African countries like Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda have reported Mpox outbreaks since July. Cases have also been reported in Sweden.
Mpox and India
In India, travelers from Pakistan and Bangladesh have reported symptoms of Mpox. In response, the central government has instructed airport, port, and border officials to be alert for international travelers showing symptoms of Mpox starting August 19.
Following a review meeting led by Health Minister JP Nadda, the Health Ministry has issued guidelines to enhance surveillance at airports, ports, and border crossings. Health centers and 32 laboratories are being prepared for detecting, isolating, and managing Mpox cases.
According to the Health Ministry, the risk of a large-scale Mpox outbreak in India is currently low. The WHO reports a total of 30 cases in India, with the last case expected in March 2024.
