The Supreme Court has taken a strong stance on the Kolkata rape and murder case. On August 20, the Court questioned the West Bengal government and the state police sharply. The Court has also asked the CBI for a status report on the case. The next hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
Supreme Court’s Strong Comments
The Supreme Court bench stated that the trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was subjected to “animal-like” behavior.
The Court announced the formation of a National Task Force to review conditions in hospitals and the safety of doctors, and to provide recommendations.
Justice JB Pardiwala, part of the three-judge committee led by the Chief Justice of India, asked about the identity and timing of the complainant in the first FIR.
The Chief Justice commented, “The family found the body at 8:30 PM, but the FIR was filed at 11:45 PM based on the father’s complaint. What was the hospital doing?”
West Bengal Government’s Response
The lawyer for the West Bengal government told the Supreme Court that they had set up a medical court according to the family’s wishes and had sent the police complaint at 2:30 PM. However, responding to the Court’s direct questions has been challenging.
