Nitesh Kumar has won a gold medal at the Paralympics 2024. He claimed victory in the men’s singles SL3 category in badminton by defeating Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell with scores of 21-14, 18-21, and 23-21. This win makes him the second Indian athlete to win a gold medal at the Paris Paralympics 2024. In total, India has now won nine medals in these games.

This was Nitesh’s first time competing in the Paralympics, and he made history by winning the gold medal on his debut. He has now become only the third Indian athlete to win a gold medal in badminton at the Paralympics, following Pramod Bhagat and Krishna Nagar, who both won gold in the men’s singles competition at the Tokyo Paralympics.

India’s Medal Tally Reaches Nine

India has so far won a total of nine medals at the Paris Paralympics. Nitesh Kumar is the first athlete to win a medal in badminton for India at these games. India has already won four medals in shooting. Avani Lekhara won gold, while Manish Narwal took silver, and Mona Agarwal and Rubina Francis secured bronze medals. In athletics, India has also won four medals: Nishad Kumar won silver in high jump, Yogesh Kathuniya won silver in discus throw, and Preeti Pal won bronze in both the women’s 100 meters and 200 meters races.

More Medals Expected in Badminton

Apart from Nitesh Kumar, India is expected to win two more medals in the men’s singles competition. Suhas Yathiraj has already reached the finals in the men’s singles SL4 category, securing at least a silver medal. In the same category, Sukant Kadam will compete in the bronze medal match. Last time, India won only one medal in badminton, but at the Paris Paralympics, the total number of medals from badminton could exceed five.
