In Batwara 1947, Sunny Deol plays Sikandar Mirza, a man who leaves Lucknow with his family and moves to Lahore following the upheaval surrounding Partition.
His life takes an unexpected turn when he discovers that an elderly Hindu woman continues to live in the house that has been assigned to his family. As tensions rise around them, Mirza decides to stand up for her and protect her despite the growing threat of extremist violence.
The character allows Deol to combine the action-oriented image associated with many of his popular films with a story centred on compassion and moral responsibility.
Rajkumar Santoshi revisits a painful chapter of history
For director Rajkumar Santoshi, Batwara 1947 is also a long-gestating project. He had narrated the story to Sunny Deol years ago, but the film took considerable time to reach production.
Santoshi has previously worked with Deol on films such as Ghayal, Damini and Ghatak. Their latest collaboration once again gives Deol a larger-than-life role, although the central conflict this time is not simply between two individuals.
The filmmaker has said that Partition demonstrated two very different sides of humanity. People displayed tremendous bravery and sacrificed their lives to protect others, while the same period also witnessed horrific acts of violence.
That contrast forms an important part of the film’s narrative.
The film is adapted from Asghar Wajahat’s play
Batwara 1947 draws its story from writer Asghar Wajahat’s play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamyai Nai.
The original story is known for using the Partition period to explore communal tensions and the possibility of human relationships surviving in the middle of hatred and violence.
For the film adaptation, Santoshi has expanded the central character and shaped Sikandar Mirza around Sunny Deol’s established screen persona.
Preity Zinta makes her return to films
Preity Zinta is making her return to Hindi cinema with Batwara 1947. She plays the wife of Sunny Deol’s character.
The actor has spoken about her interest in period films and the opportunity to experience the lifestyle of another era through her character.
Her role also gives the film a glimpse into the domestic lives of families during the late 1940s, when women’s lives were largely centred around the household and family.
Zinta had stepped away from regular acting while concentrating on her personal and family life. She has now indicated that she is willing to take up projects that genuinely excite her.
Dharmendra’s emotional connection to the film
The project has an especially personal connection for Sunny Deol because of his father, legendary actor Dharmendra.
Dharmendra was born in 1935 in what was then undivided India, and stories of Partition remained part of the family’s memories. Sunny has previously spoken about hearing accounts of the period from older members of his family while growing up.
According to Sunny, Dharmendra was present when Santoshi narrated the film to him and became emotional while listening to the story.
The veteran actor also watched a version of Batwara 1947 before his death in November 2025. Sunny has said that his father liked the film.
A new phase for Sunny Deol
The movie arrives at a significant point in Sunny Deol’s career. The enormous response to Gadar 2 brought the actor back into the spotlight and was followed by several major projects.
He has since been associated with films including Jaat and Border 2, while his upcoming projects include Nitesh Tiwari’s much-awaited Ramayana.
With Batwara 1947, Deol once again takes on a character who is expected to appeal to audiences familiar with his powerful screen presence, while dealing with a subject that carries considerable historical and emotional weight.
