After India’s 4-1 victory over England in the five-match T20 series, head coach Gautam Gambhir finally addressed the “concussion substitute” controversy. The issue arose during the fourth T20 match between India and England, when Harshit Rana was brought in as a concussion substitute for Shivam Dube.
What happened? In the fourth T20 match, Shivam Dube was hit on the head by a ball and was unable to continue playing. According to the rules, India replaced him with Harshit Rana as a concussion substitute. However, former England captain Kevin Pietersen and other cricket critics raised concerns, calling it a “strategic move” by India. Pietersen argued that replacing Dube with Rana wasn’t a “like-for-like” substitution, and it gave India an extra bowling option, which could be seen as an unfair advantage.
Gambhir’s response When asked about the controversy after the series concluded, Gautam Gambhir responded in a light-hearted manner, saying, “If he (Harshit Rana) had played, he would have definitely bowled four overs!” Gambhir dismissed the issue as unnecessary and pointed out that such debates are common in cricket.
