Bangladesh Cricket Board Dissolved After T20 World Cup Row; Tamim Iqbal Appointed Head of New Committee

Bangladesh cricket has entered a new phase after the National Sports Council (NSC) dissolved the Aminul Islam-led Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) following the controversy surrounding the ICC T20 World Cup.

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has now been appointed as the president of an 11-member ad-hoc committee, which will temporarily oversee the operations of the cricket board and conduct fresh elections within the next three months.

Investigation Reveals Irregularities in BCB Elections

The decision to dissolve the board came after an investigation by a council-appointed committee found several irregularities in the BCB elections held on October 6 last year.

NSC Sports Director Aminul Ehsan confirmed the development while presenting the findings of the investigation.

The report has also been shared with the International Cricket Council (ICC), which has been informed about the formation of the interim committee.

The newly formed panel will now be responsible for organising fresh elections for the Bangladesh Cricket Board within three months.

Members of the Ad-Hoc Committee

The newly formed 11-member committee includes former cricketers and administrators.

Committee Members:

  • Tamim Iqbal – President
  • Rashna Imam
  • Miza Yasir Abbas
  • Syed Ibrahim Ahmed
  • Israfil Khosru
  • Minhajul Abedin Nannu
  • Athar Ali Khan
  • Tanvir Chowdhury
  • Salman Ispahani
  • Rafiqul Islam Babu
  • Fahim Sinha

The T20 World Cup Controversy

The leadership crisis largely stems from the T20 World Cup controversy, where Bangladesh refused to send its team to India for the tournament.

The situation escalated after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) asked IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman due to growing tensions between the two countries.

Following the development, Bangladesh demanded that its matches be shifted to Sri Lanka instead of India.

However, after conducting an independent security assessment, the ICC found no safety concerns regarding matches being held in India.

Despite this, the BCB leadership maintained its stance. As a result, Bangladesh were removed from the tournament and replaced by Scotland in Group C.

Pakistan Also Threatened Boycott

The situation briefly escalated further when Pakistan reportedly threatened to boycott the tournament and even considered refusing to play against India.

However, tensions eventually eased after the ICC reportedly assured Bangladesh of hosting rights for a future global event before 2028, most likely the Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

Tamim Iqbal Row Sparked Further Controversy

During the crisis, former captain Tamim Iqbal had publicly urged the Bangladesh Cricket Board to prioritise the players and participate in the tournament.

However, the comments led to a major controversy after BCB Finance Committee Chairman M Nazmul Islam accused Tamim of being an “Indian agent.”

The remark sparked backlash from players and fans across the country.

Following the criticism, the board later announced the removal of Najmul Islam from his position.

In a statement, the board said the decision was taken “in the best interest of the organisation.”

What Happens Next for Bangladesh Cricket

With Tamim Iqbal now leading the ad-hoc committee, the immediate priority will be stabilising the cricket board and restoring confidence in the administration.

The committee has been tasked with conducting new BCB elections within the next three months, which could shape the future of Bangladesh cricket after months of controversy and administrative turmoil.
