Travelers in Andhra Pradesh will soon have a new gateway for air travel as commercial flight services from Bhogapuram Airport are set to begin on August 17, 2026. The airport, recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is expected to improve connectivity across north coastal Andhra Pradesh and support the region’s economic growth.
Officials have confirmed that all required approvals have been completed, paving the way for scheduled passenger flights later this month.
New Airport to Improve Regional Connectivity
Situated in Bhogapuram in the Vizianagaram district, the airport has been officially named Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport in memory of the renowned freedom fighter.
The project has been developed by GMR Group as a greenfield airport, meaning it has been constructed from the ground up with modern aviation infrastructure and room for future expansion.
Commercial Flights Begin This Month
According to the Andhra Pradesh government, airlines are expected to start operating scheduled commercial flights from the airport from August 17.
The airport is expected to serve passengers traveling to and from north Andhra Pradesh while offering better access to major cities across the country.
Built to Handle Future Passenger Growth
During its initial phase, the airport has the capacity to accommodate around six million passengers every year.
However, planners have designed the project with long-term growth in mind. As demand increases, the airport’s infrastructure can be expanded to handle up to 40 million passengers annually, making it one of the largest future aviation hubs in the state.
The passenger terminal has also been planned to support future expansion without major structural changes.
Economic and Tourism Benefits
The launch of flight operations is expected to bring multiple benefits to the region. Improved air connectivity could boost tourism, encourage business investments, generate employment opportunities, and reduce travel time for residents of north coastal Andhra Pradesh.
The airport is also expected to strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s transportation network by providing an additional aviation hub alongside existing airports in the state.
