Passengers planning to travel by air may soon get some relief on ticket prices, as the Centre has hinted at a possible reduction in airfares if global crude oil prices continue to remain stable. The development comes after international oil prices softened following easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, leading to expectations of lower aviation fuel costs.
The government has said it is closely tracking fuel price movements before holding discussions with airlines on reducing fuel surcharges that were introduced during the period of higher operating costs.
Centre Keeping a Close Watch on Aviation Fuel Prices
Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu said that the government reviews Air Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices every fortnight, with revisions based on international crude oil trends.
According to the minister, authorities are currently evaluating whether the recent decline in crude prices represents a long-term trend or a temporary correction. A decision on airfare revisions will be taken only after there is greater confidence about price stability.
He noted that discussions with airline operators are already underway to understand the impact of changing fuel costs on the aviation sector.
Lower Fuel Costs Could Bring Down Airfares
ATF is one of the biggest expenses for airlines, often accounting for a significant portion of their operating costs. When fuel prices increase, airlines generally pass on the additional burden to passengers through fuel surcharges or higher ticket prices.
With crude oil prices now moving lower, the government believes there could be room for airlines to reconsider these additional charges if the decline continues over a sustained period.
However, officials have made it clear that any reduction in ticket prices will depend on the long-term stability of fuel costs rather than short-term market fluctuations.
Government Introduced Relief Measures During Crisis
During the recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which caused volatility in global oil markets, the Centre introduced several measures to support domestic airlines.
These included capping increases in Air Turbine Fuel prices for scheduled carriers, reducing certain airport-related charges, and strengthening financial assistance through emergency credit support mechanisms. These initiatives were aimed at protecting both airlines and passengers from the impact of rising fuel costs.
When Can Airfares Become Cheaper?
While the possibility of lower ticket prices has improved, the government has not announced any specific timeline.
Officials said they will continue monitoring crude oil and ATF prices over the coming weeks. If the current downward trend remains consistent, the Civil Aviation Ministry is expected to begin formal discussions with airlines regarding the removal or reduction of fuel surcharges and other additional charges.
Until then, airfare reductions remain under consideration rather than a confirmed decision.
Relief May Be on the Horizon for Air Travellers
For frequent flyers and holiday travellers, the recent decline in crude oil prices could eventually translate into cheaper flight tickets. Although airlines are yet to announce fare revisions, industry observers believe sustained stability in fuel prices could encourage carriers to lower operating costs and offer more competitive fares.
If market conditions remain favourable, domestic passengers may soon benefit from more affordable air travel in the coming months.
