Kolkata Rape Case: CBI Gets 8-Day Remand for All Four Accused

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been granted an 8-day remand for all four accused in the Kolkata rape case, including former RG Kar Hospital principal Sandeep Ghosh. The accused were arrested on Monday evening for financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital.

The four arrested individuals are Sandeep Ghosh, Biplab Sinha, Suman Hajara, and Afsar Ali. They were presented in court on Tuesday. The CBI requested a 10-day remand for the accused, arguing that exposing a large network of corruption was crucial. The court granted the 8-day remand, and the next hearing is scheduled for September 10.

RG Kar Hospital and Sandeep Ghosh are in the news due to a serious case. On August 9, a junior doctor at RG Kar Hospital was raped and later murdered. The Calcutta High Court has ordered a CBI investigation into this case. Sandeep Ghosh’s role in the rape case is under suspicion, and he has been questioned multiple times by the CBI, including undergoing a polygraph test.

The Calcutta High Court has also tasked the CBI with investigating financial irregularities at the hospital. Complaints of corruption during Ghosh’s tenure as principal have been reported. The Kolkata Police’s SIT had also investigated this matter.

The CBI has filed an FIR against the accused under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (fraud) of the IPC, as well as section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The potential punishments include up to life imprisonment for 120B, up to 7 years for 420, and 6 months to 5 years for the Prevention of Corruption Act.
