Medical staff across various locations are protesting after the tragic incident of rape and murder in Kolkata. On Wednesday, October 4, 2024, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) President urged the protesting doctors to return to work and leave the matter of justice to the Supreme Court.

IMA’s Statement: Follow the Supreme Court’s Decision

According to an ANI report, the IMA said, “The incident involving the trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Hospital has shaken the conscience of the entire nation. The anger and frustration across the country stem from the fact that she was a rising doctor and the only daughter of lower-middle-class parents. The whole nation has embraced her as their own daughter.” The IMA President emphasized that the entire medical staff should respect the Supreme Court’s decision.

IMA Urges Doctors to Return to Work

The IMA stated, “It is understandable that medical professionals are angry. Resident doctors have taken to the streets in protest, expressing their deep sorrow and rage. The IMA called for a 24-hour shutdown of emergency services. Following this, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the situation and formed a national task force. The Court has urged doctors to trust the legal process, ensuring that justice and healthcare should not be halted.”

The IMA appealed, “Patient care and safety are the primary concerns of the medical profession. All doctors practicing modern medicine should return to patient care.” Doctors in different states are protesting, demanding justice for the victim and better safety measures for healthcare professionals.
