After becoming the third-largest party in the country following the Lok Sabha elections, the Samajwadi Party (SP) is now focusing on expanding its influence in other states. Following its plans in Jammu-Kashmir and Haryana, the SP is preparing to make an impact in the Maharashtra Assembly elections as well. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav is eyeing constituencies in Maharashtra where a significant number of people from Uttar Pradesh reside.
Meeting in Lucknow
Akhilesh Yadav held a meeting in Lucknow on Thursday to discuss the Maharashtra Assembly elections. The meeting included discussions with Maharashtra’s state president, Abu Asim Azmi, and other party leaders about the party’s strongholds in the state. Following this, Akhilesh Yadav appointed four key leaders to oversee the elections in Mumbai and Maharashtra.

Four Leaders Appointed
The SP has appointed the following leaders for Maharashtra:
- Mata Prasad Pandey – Leader of Opposition in the UP Assembly
- Indrajeet Saroj – MLA from Manjhanpur, Kaushambi
- Tufani Saroj – MLA from Kerakat
- Lucky Yadav – MLA from Malhani, Jaunpur
These appointments consider social equations, including two Dalits, one OBC (Other Backward Class), and one Brahmin. Abu Asim Azmi, who already represents minority communities, will also play a significant role in this effort.
Strategy and Alliances
Akhilesh Yadav aims to contest the Maharashtra elections as part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance. Sources indicate that the SP has requested 10-12 seats from the Congress in Maharashtra. The SP believes it has influence in 22 constituencies in the state. However, Congress has not yet clarified its stance on this request. The SP has also stated that it will only share seats with Congress in Uttar Pradesh if Congress allocates seats in Haryana and Maharashtra.
