West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a comment about Amit Shah after Jay Shah was appointed as the ICC Chairman. Banerjee said, “Home Minister, congratulations. Your son didn’t become a politician, but he has become the ICC Chairman.”
She praised Jay Shah for his achievement and noted that he has become very powerful.
Banerjee’s remark came during a period of heightened tension between the TMC and BJP, especially over a recent rape and murder case involving junior doctors in Kolkata. Previously, Banerjee had accused the BJP of trying to cause unrest in West Bengal, leading to a response from the BJP.
Jay Shah Elected ICC Chairman
On Tuesday, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah was elected unopposed as the next ICC Chairman. At 35, he will be the youngest to hold this position. Jay Shah will take over from the current ICC Chairman, Greg Barclay of New Zealand, on December 1. Barclay chose not to run for re-election for the third time.
Jay Shah will need to leave his position as BCCI Secretary, a role he has held since 2019. Before Shah, Indian cricket administrators who have held the ICC Chairman position include Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar. Shah was the only candidate left for the ICC Chairman role.
