In the Kolkata rape and murder case, the Supreme Court has issued a significant order. The Court directed that all photos of the victim be removed from social media. The petition argued that, according to the Supreme Court’s orders, the identity of the rape victim should not be made public. However, the victim’s photos were still on social media platforms, prompting the Chief Justice of India (CJI) to order their removal.

The petition filed in the Supreme Court stated that revealing the doctor’s and the victim’s family’s identity harmed their dignity. The petition also involved major social media platforms and several ministries of the central government. Previously, the Calcutta High Court had appealed for the victim’s identity to remain private and advised against sharing photos on social media.

    Supreme Court’s Orders and Questions

Earlier, the Supreme Court took cognizance of the case and conducted a hearing on August 20. The Court raised questions about various aspects of the incident. It asked the CBI to submit a status report by August 22 and ordered the creation of a National Task Force to ensure the safety of doctors in hospitals.

    Questions on Principal’s Reappointment

During the hearing, the Supreme Court questioned why the principal of RG Kar Medical College attempted to label the case as a suicide, despite early knowledge of the crime. The Court also questioned how the principal was appointed to another college while an investigation into their conduct was ongoing.

    Nationwide Protests and Attention

The three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, noted that nationwide protests had highlighted the lack of institutional safety for doctors. The Court observed that medical associations had continuously raised this issue, pointing out that medical professionals often become targets of violence while performing their duties.
