South African fast bowler Morne Morkel has been appointed as the new bowling coach for Team India. His contract will start from September 1. Jay Shah announced this to a cricket website. Gautam Gambhir had previously suggested Morkel’s name to the BCCI for the position.
Morkel played international cricket from 2006 to 2018. During this time, he appeared in 86 Test matches, 117 ODIs, and 44 T20Is. Gambhir and Morkel had a good working relationship at Lucknow Super Giants, where Gambhir was a mentor for two years. After Gambhir moved to Kolkata Knight Riders and Andy Flower joined Royal Challengers Bangalore, Morkel stayed on with the team as the bowling coach under new head coach Justin Langer.
Morkel was the bowling coach for the Pakistan national team until November 2023. He debuted in Test cricket in 2006 and played 86 Tests for South Africa. By March 2018, he became the fifth South African bowler to take 300 Test wickets. He also played 117 ODIs and 44 T20Is, starting in these formats in 2007.
On February 26, 2018, Morkel announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket after the Test series against Australia. His last international match was against Australia in March 2018.
