A horrifying incident took place in Amethi, where a Dalit teacher, Sunil Kumar (35), his wife Poonam Bharti, and their two young daughters, Srishti (6) and Lado (2), were brutally shot dead at their home. The murder occurred around 7:30 PM near the Ahorwa Bhavani Temple road. By the time the police and locals entered the house, the killers had already escaped through the back door.
Sunil Kumar, the victim, was from Sudamapur village in Raebareli district and worked as an assistant teacher at Panhauna Composite School in Amethi district. He had been recently transferred to Amethi and had brought his family along just three months ago.
The Conflict Leading to the Tragedy
The trouble began on August 18, 2024, when Sunil’s wife, Poonam Bharti, went to Sumitra Hospital in Raebareli with her son. There, Chandan Verma, a resident of Telia Kot in Raebareli, allegedly harassed and assaulted her. Poonam filed an FIR under the SC/ST Act, accusing Chandan of attempting indecent behavior, assault, and issuing threats to kill her. Despite this, the police dismissed the matter with only a minor charge against Chandan.
Poonam had mentioned in her complaint that Chandan had previously threatened her and expressed fear for her and her family’s safety. She wrote that if anything happened to her or her family, Chandan Verma would be responsible. Now, after the brutal murder, Chandan is the prime suspect, and the police are actively searching for him.
Chief Minister’s Response and Investigation
After the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences and ordered an immediate investigation. High-ranking officials, including Amethi District Magistrate Nisha Anant, Police Superintendent Anoop Kumar Singh, and senior officers from Ayodhya and Lucknow, visited the crime scene to gather evidence.

According to IG Zone Ayodhya Praveen Kumar, the forensic team has collected crucial evidence from the site. He noted that no forced entry occurred, indicating that the door might have been left open or unlocked. The police have formed four teams to solve the case quickly, and they believe they are close to finding the culprits.
Family’s Grief and Political Reactions
Sunil’s father, Ramgopal, shared that his son had been attacked by criminals a few days earlier, but locals chased them away. Sunil had even filed a case at that time. The family is now devastated, with Ramgopal stating, “I lost my whole family.”
Politicians, including opposition leader Akhilesh Yadav and Amethi MP Kishori Lal Sharma, have criticized the government’s handling of law and order. They expressed anger and grief over the incident and demanded justice.
Accused Chandan Verma Still at Large
Chandan Verma, the main suspect, is still on the run. Police are questioning his family and raiding multiple locations to catch him. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to bring the killers to justice soon.
