Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s judicial custody has been extended until August 20 in the Delhi liquor policy case. Today, he appeared via video conference at the Rouse Avenue Court in connection with the CBI investigation.
In a related matter with the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the Delhi High Court asked the ED to clarify why they are challenging Kejriwal’s bail. The Supreme Court had already granted him interim bail in the money laundering case related to the liquor policy. The High Court questioned whether the ED would arrest Kejriwal again if their challenge was accepted.
Justice Neena Bansal Krishna asked the ED’s lawyer, “What will happen if I approve your plea? Will you arrest him again?” The ED’s lawyer responded that there was no plan to arrest him again, as no one has declared his detention illegal. Justice Krishna said the plea was so confusing that she was unsure if it was about bail, illegal detention, or compensation.
On July 12, the Supreme Court gave Kejriwal interim bail in the money laundering case and sent the matter to a larger bench for further review. Despite this, Kejriwal remains in custody due to his judicial remand in the CBI investigation related to the excise policy case.
The ED’s lawyer initially asked to delay the hearing to Thursday because the Additional Solicitor General was busy in another court. Justice Krishna said a Thursday hearing was not possible and criticized the ED for frequently asking for delays. She noted that such requests should be reasonable and that the court had other work.
The ED’s lawyer clarified that the delay request was made by Kejriwal’s lawyer, not by the ED. The High Court has now scheduled the next hearing for September 5.
