ED Uncovers Major Bank Fraud of ₹1201 Crore, Case Unfolds

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has made a significant revelation in a ₹1201.85 crore bank fraud case. This fraud caused a major loss to a consortium of banks led by Canara Bank. On December 6, 2024, the ED filed a charge sheet in the Special PMLA Court in New Delhi against Karan A Channa, Radhika Channa, Anita Ding, and Amira Pure Foods Private Limited. The court took cognizance of the case and directed further legal action on January 31, 2025.

Fraudulent Loan and Embezzlement Allegations

The charge sheet alleges that the accused intentionally committed fraud against the bank and embezzled millions of rupees. According to the ED, the accused used fake documents to secure loans and diverted the funds to various places. The court has taken note of the case and directed faster legal proceedings.

Company’s Deliberate Failure to Repay Loan

Amira Pure Foods Private Limited, a company involved in exporting food products, primarily basmati rice, was given a loan of ₹1201.85 crore by a consortium led by Canara Bank. However, it later came to light that the company deliberately failed to repay the loan and misused the funds by transferring them elsewhere. This issue surfaced in 2021 when banks raised concerns about the company’s financial status.

ED’s Investigation Reveals Money Laundering

The ED’s investigation confirmed money laundering activities and revealed that the loan was obtained through fraudulent documents. Additionally, the accused used shell companies to transfer funds abroad. The CBI initially filed a case, but the ED later intensified the investigation.

Stricter Action Against Money Laundering

Following the court’s cognizance of the case, legal proceedings against the accused will now move faster. If proven guilty, the defendants could face severe punishment. The ED’s actions send a strong message against money laundering.
