Puja Khedkar, a young and ambitious IAS officer, has been summoned back to her training academy in Mussoorie amidst a storm of controversy. She’s been accused of misusing her power and privileges, as well as fudging her disability and caste certificates to get ahead in the civil services.
Khedkar was initially posted in Pune, but was transferred to Washim after allegations started pouring in. Now, she’s been told to report back to the academy by July 23 for further investigation.
The problem started when Khedkar submitted certificates claiming she had a visual impairment, which entitled her to special benefits. However, when she was asked to undergo a medical check-up in Delhi, she skipped the appointments six times. It turns out she had also applied for a disability certificate in Pune, but was rejected after the medical tests.
Khedkar is crying foul, saying she’s being unfairly targeted by the media and that the allegations are baseless. But the evidence suggests otherwise. She was accused of demanding perks and facilities she wasn’t entitled to, like using a red beacon on her private car and occupying a senior officer’s office in Pune.
The central government has set up a committee to investigate Khedkar’s credentials, and they’re expected to submit a report in two weeks. Meanwhile, questions are being raised about how she managed to get into the civil services under the OBC quota, given that her father allegedly has assets worth a whopping ₹ 40 crore.
Khedkar says she’s willing to cooperate with the investigation and accept the committee’s decision. But with the police also searching for her parents in connection with a criminal case, it looks like Khedkar’s troubles are far from over.
