Test cricket has become less popular due to the rise of T20 tournaments. To support Test cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) plans to raise ₹125 crore. This money will be used to pay player salaries and cover other team expenses. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) supports this plan, as Test cricket’s popularity has declined with the growth of T20 leagues like the IPL.
According to a report from The Sydney Morning Herald, Cricket Australia proposed creating a special fund for Test cricket. This proposal has been backed by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah and the England and Wales Cricket Board. Shah is also a candidate for the ICC presidency. The funds will increase the minimum match fees for Test players and help cover costs for overseas tours.
Many players are now prioritizing T20 cricket over Test matches due to the higher pay in T20 leagues. For example, many West Indies players prefer T20 cricket. However, the funds will mainly benefit players from countries where salaries are already high, such as India, Australia, and England.
Australian players, like their Indian counterparts, receive good salaries. Last year, Pat Cummins, the Australian Test and ODI captain, earned around ₹25 crore. Regular players in Australia can earn between ₹8 crore and ₹16 crore.
