Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently completed his visit to the United States, where he met US President Donald Trump. Just after this meeting, Meta announced on Saturday that India will be part of the world’s longest undersea cable project – ‘Project Waterworth’. This project is expected to be completed by the end of this decade.
What is ‘Project Waterworth’?
‘Project Waterworth’ is an ambitious undersea cable project launched by Meta. It will connect five major continents and span over 50,000 kilometers, which is longer than the Earth’s circumference. This project was included in the US-India joint leadership statement issued on February 13, after PM Modi’s visit to the US.
Meta’s Statement on the Project
A Meta spokesperson said on Saturday:
“Meta is investing in India, one of its biggest markets. This project will bring the world’s longest, most powerful, and technologically advanced undersea cable network, connecting India, the US, and other locations.”
Boost to AI and Technology
The undersea cable system will create three new global corridors to provide high-speed connectivity for AI innovation. The project will use 24 fiber-pair cables, making it far more powerful than existing cable networks.
Meta is making huge investments in AI infrastructure, with a planned budget of $60–65 billion in 2025. The company has already participated in more than 20 undersea cable projects.
Challenges in the Project
Though Project Waterworth looks promising, it is not easy to execute. The cables will pass through high-risk areas, so protective measures will be taken to prevent damage. The project faces technical and logistical challenges, but Meta sees it as a key step toward future technological advancements.
With this project, India will strengthen its position in AI and internet technology, ensuring faster and more reliable connectivity for the future.
