On July 30, a massive landslide in Wayanad district caused the death of at least 226 people, and many are still missing. The landslide occurred in the villages of Mundakki, Chooralmala, and Vellari Mala due to continuous heavy rainfall.
To tackle the disaster in Wayanad, both the central and state governments have made every possible effort. Over 1,200 personnel from NDRF and SDRF are working to assist those affected. The central government has also sent millions in aid. Many lives have been saved so far. Today (Saturday), Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Wayanad to assess the situation. He will conduct an aerial survey of the affected areas, observe relief and rehabilitation efforts, visit relief camps and hospitals, and hold a crucial meeting on relief, rescue, and rehabilitation.
226 Deaths So Far
The landslide on July 30 resulted in at least 226 deaths, with several people still missing. Due to heavy rainfall, a major landslide hit the villages of Mundakki, Chooralmala, and Vellari Mala. The Modi government took immediate action by deploying over 1,200 rescuers, including teams from NDRF, the army, air force, navy, fire services, and civil defense.
Army Builds 190-Foot Bailey Bridge
For medical assistance and treatment, over 100 ambulances with doctors and medical staff have been deployed. The Indian Army built a 190-foot Bailey bridge in Wayanad, which has been crucial for moving heavy machinery and ambulances. This bridge, completed in just 71 hours, allowed for the deployment of vehicles and machinery to rescue about 200 people trapped due to the damaged bridge. So far, NDRF rescue teams have saved 30 people, evacuated 520, and recovered 112 bodies.
1200 Crore in the Last 5 Years
The central government has formed an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) to visit the affected areas from August 8 to 10. The central government has acted promptly to provide relief funds. On April 1 this year, Kerala’s SDRF account had about 395 crores. The first installment of over 145.60 crores for the current year’s SDRF was released in advance on July 31. Over the past 5 years, the Modi government has allocated approximately 1,200 crores to the SDRF as part of the central share of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
