Aman Sehrawat, at 21, has become India’s youngest Olympic medalist by winning a bronze medal in wrestling at the Paris 2024 Olympics. He is the only male wrestler representing India this year. His performance has increased India’s count of Olympic medals in wrestling to eight, making it the second most successful sport for the country in the Olympics after hockey.
Sachin Tendulkar’s Praise
Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar praised Aman Sehrawat on social media, congratulating him for becoming India’s youngest Olympic medalist at the age of 21. Tendulkar wrote, “Congratulations Aman Sehrawat for becoming India’s youngest Olympic medalist at just 21. This victory is not only yours but also for the entire Indian wrestling team. Every Indian is proud of your achievement. I am sure your parents are looking at you from heaven and feeling very proud.”
Aman’s Historic Win
Aman Sehrawat won his bronze medal match against Darrian Cruz from Puerto Rico with a score of 13-5. At 21 years, 0 months, and 24 days old, he became the youngest individual Olympic medalist from India, surpassing PV Sindhu’s record from the Rio 2016 Olympics. Sehrawat’s bronze medal helped boost the Indian team’s morale when it seemed they might return from the Olympics without any medals. This bronze is India’s sixth medal at the Paris Olympics, adding to a silver and five bronze medals so far.
Performance and Achievements
Sehrawat was the only male wrestler from India this year. He began his campaign with strong performances, winning his first two matches with technical superiority. However, he lost to Japan’s top-seeded Re Higuchi in the semifinals. Sehrawat defeated former European champion Vladimir Igorov and the 2022 World Champion Zelimkhan Abakarov in his earlier rounds.
Other Indian wrestlers like Ritika Hooda and Anshu Malik did not advance past their matches. Vinish Phogat qualified for the women’s 50 kg final but was disqualified due to a weight check issue.
