India captain Shreyas Iyer produced a captain’s innings under pressure, scoring 68 runs against England in the opening T20I of the five-match series and registering his name in the record books. While rain denied fans a result at Riverside Ground, Iyer’s performance emerged as the biggest talking point of the match.
Shreyas Iyer Becomes First Indian Captain to Hit T20I Fifty in England
Leading India in T20Is after taking over the captaincy, Iyer delivered when his side needed him most. His 68-run knock from 47 balls, featuring six boundaries and a six, made him the first Indian captain to score a half-century in a men’s T20 International on English soil.
The milestone eclipsed the previous Indian captaincy record held by Virat Kohli, whose highest T20I score as captain in England was 47 against the hosts in Cardiff in 2018.
Another Landmark: 5,000 International Runs
Apart from the captaincy record, Iyer also crossed 5,000 international runs during his innings.
The right-handed batter now has 5,031 international runs, including:
- 3,035 runs in One-Day Internationals
- 1,185 runs in T20 Internationals
- 811 runs in Test cricket
The achievement further strengthens Iyer’s growing stature across all three formats.
India Recover After Early Setbacks
India suffered early blows after electing to bat first, but Iyer steadied the innings with a calm and calculated approach. At the other end, opener Abhishek Sharma played an explosive knock of 59 from only 24 deliveries, allowing India to post a competitive 189/7 in 20 overs.
England, however, never got the opportunity to begin their chase as continuous rain forced officials to abandon the match.
Pujara Applauds Iyer’s Leadership
Former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara praised Iyer’s composure after the match, saying the skipper displayed maturity by rebuilding the innings following the early wickets.
Pujara noted that Iyer balanced caution with aggression perfectly and led from the front when India found themselves under pressure, calling it one of the captain’s finest T20I innings.
India Look Ahead to Manchester Clash
The opening match ended without a result, leaving the series level at 0-0. India will now travel to Old Trafford Cricket Ground for the second T20I, where Iyer and his team will aim to convert their strong batting display into their first victory of the series.
