The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) is a central armed police force in India. It is responsible for guarding the borders between India and Nepal, and India and Bhutan. The top officer in the SSB is the Director General (DG). The DG is the head of the SSB and leads all its activities.
About SSB
SSB is part of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). There are seven forces under CAPF, including:
- Border Security Force (BSF)
- Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)
- Assam Rifles
- Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)
Other CAPF forces are:
- National Security Guard (NSG)
- Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)
- Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)
All these forces operate under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The SSB was established on March 15, 1963, after the 1962 India-China war. The first woman Director General of SSB was Archana Ramasundaram. Currently, the DG of SSB is Daljeet Singh Chaudhary.
Roles and Responsibilities
Apart from border security, SSB also participates in disaster relief, internal security, and anti-naxal operations. SSB personnel undergo rigorous physical and mental training to handle any challenges at the border. The SSB faces various challenges such as smuggling, naxalism, and terrorism. It was the first border force to recruit women battalions.
