UCC in Gujarat: Will Uniform Civil Code be Implemented in Gujarat? CM Bhupendra Patel Set to Make Big Announcement

Gujarat Uniform Civil Code: A major announcement regarding the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is expected in Gujarat today (February 4). It is likely that the formation of a committee will be announced. Gujarat’s Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi will hold a press conference at 12:30 PM. The committee is expected to have three to five members.

It is important to note that the Gujarat government had expressed its intention to implement the UCC back in 2022. In 2023, the Law Commission also revived discussions on the matter and sought new inputs from various stakeholders. According to a senior official, the Gujarat government had already declared its intent to implement UCC in the state.

UCC Already Implemented in Uttarakhand
Earlier, on January 27, Uttarakhand became the first state to implement the UCC. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami launched the UCC portal and rules, stating that by implementing UCC, they were paying tribute to the Constitution’s architect, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The UCC in Uttarakhand applies to both residents of the state and those from outside, with exemptions for Scheduled Tribes.

What is the Uniform Civil Code (UCC)?
The Uniform Civil Code means that all citizens, regardless of their religion, caste, or gender, will be governed by the same laws in the country. If UCC is implemented in a state, it will apply to various areas like marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and even live-in relationships. Couples living in live-in relationships will also be required to register their relationship.
