Atishi Marlena: From Manish Sisodia’s Advisor to Delhi’s Chief Minister

Atishi Marlena will now be the new Chief Minister of Delhi. After Arvind Kejriwal resigned from the CM position on Tuesday, he proposed Atishi’s name as his successor. Most of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators agreed with this decision. After a voting process and a meeting of AAP legislators, Atishi’s name was officially announced as the new CM of Delhi.

Before the meeting of legislators, Kejriwal held a meeting with AAP’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC) at his residence. All the current cabinet ministers and PAC members were present. During this meeting, Kejriwal discussed with each leader about the new Chief Minister and took their feedback.

Atishi’s Political Journey

Atishi joined AAP at the time of its formation. She was a key member of the committee that drafted the party’s manifesto for the 2013 assembly elections. AAP has credited her with playing an important role in shaping the party’s policies in its early days. Atishi also served as a spokesperson for the party. From July 2015 to April 2018, she worked as an advisor to Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Manish Sisodia, helping improve the quality of education in Delhi’s government schools.

In 2019, Atishi was AAP’s candidate for the East Delhi seat in the Lok Sabha elections but lost to BJP’s Gautam Gambhir by 4.77 lakh votes. However, she made a comeback in the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, winning from the Kalkaji constituency by more than 11,000 votes. Her growing importance within the party was evident when she was appointed as the in-charge of AAP’s Goa unit after the 2020 elections. Now, she has been entrusted with the responsibility of being Delhi’s Chief Minister, taking the place of Kejriwal’s most trusted leader.
